Following the reports of Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice reboot landing a 2027 date, it appears that the leads are almost getting locked down. Per Variety, Elvis star Austin Butler is in negotiations to join Michael B. Jordan, also in talks, for the reimaging of the classic NBC police drama. Should the deal get finalized, the stars will take on the roles of Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs.
The potential casting of Butler might be a surprise to some. Early rumors for Vice pegged Top Gun: Maverick’s Glenn Powell for Crockett, given his fast rise as a Hollywood leading man. But for any actor filling the shoes of original star Don Johnson, it’s more than looks that make Crockett memorable. He’s a man constantly on the edge, barely sleeps at home, and has a penchant for bad girls. Butler’s on-screen presence in The Bikeriders and the recent Caught Stealing has traces of the kind of ‘80s bad boy traits that make him a potential successor to Johnson.

Jordan, as Tubbs, on the other hand, is a slightly different story. The extraordinarily talented star of Creed and Sinners is the man of the moment. Yet, Vice is just another case of Jordan relying on IPs for box office success rather than more Sinners-type original projects. It’s not that this writer lacks confidence, he could be as hip as Philip Michael Thomas. But Jamie Foxx’s take in the 2006 reboot by Michael Mann was uncharacteristically mute in personality. It remains to be seen if Jordan can deliver a performance that captures the fun and the determination of Thomas’s Tubbs.
The Batman’s Dylan Clark produces Miami Vice with Kosinski, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer. Set to be shot with IMAX cameras, production begins in 2026 for a scheduled Aug. 6, 2027 release. The official logline for the reboot teases that the new Vice will be “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”
