The Avatar sequels start up production once again!
Just when Jurassic World: Dominion stole all the press as the first big blockbusters to return to production, Avatar has to undercut it. COVID-19 resulted in countless productions getting shut down. While countries have been making overall progress, it hasn’t been quite clear how soon productions would be starting on. From those I’ve been speaking with at various stages of the production process, many were still playing it day-by-day. Little did we know that one of the biggest upcoming movies was starting up soon.
Producer Jon Landau recently took to Instagram. In that post, he revealed that production on the big-budget Avatar sequels has restarted. Here’s what he had to say.
“Used my iPhone to snap a picture of our first shot back in production on the Avatar sequels,” Landau wrote.
The image features what looks like a skeleton crew spread out in a sound stage. What looks like James Cameron is seated in front of a monitor as he directs an actor. The actor in question is clear across the stage on top of a bunch of blue and green screen-covered platforms.
For the most part, the crew does seem to be relatively spaced out, though I think I only count two masks among them. Of course, I’m happy to see Hollywood slowly starting to restart their productions, but I hope they’re careful. All around, I’ve seen this trend of American seemingly growing “bored” with staying at home, and starting things up without much thought. Obviously, I’m no expert, but it is a concern. I’d rather films be delayed for another six months than risk any more deaths. My fingers are crossed that this production is adhering to new COVID guidelines.
