Avengers 4 Writers Tease Bigger Roles For [SPOILERS]

Disclaimer: This post contains major spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

There is a double-edged sword to these big event team-up films like Avengers: Infinity War. Yes, on the plus side, we get to see all our favorite Marvel Studios characters join forces to take on a much bigger force. The downside, however, is that with so many characters crowding up the screen, there’s only so much time you can devote to each one in the story. In the case of Infinity War, pretty much everyone got a moment, but not everyone had a big role.

Surprisingly, the ones that got the short end of the stick in my mind were the likes of Captain America and Black Widow. While their particular subplot drove the narrative on Earth, there was much more focus put on characters like Vision and Scarlet Witch. Luckily for us, it sounds like the screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were more than aware of this, and in an interview with THR, they teased larger roles for those characters.

Markus: Some of the people, when you weigh up who you are seeing, seem to take a little bit of a back seat in this one. When we did crack them, what we realized was they had far more potential in the movie coming next year, just in terms of how their character would be tested by the story. I’m not telling you what the story is. I will say there is less Steve Rogers and Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) than you might expect in this movie [Infinity War]. Because they are such hard-bitten people, when a threat comes, they stand there and they take the threat. They don’t crack. They don’t whimper. They don’t start talking about all their failed opportunities. So, there isn’t that much to explore, especially when you don’t have a lot of time. But there’s a lot later.

McFeely: We cracked them both [Infinity War and Avengers 4] together, so we had to give ourselves permission to say that some people are going to get more in the next movie.

If you’ve seen the movie, you know that a good portion of our leads end up disintegrating into dust. What we are left with are all the original Avengers characters and a handful of extra characters, and from the sound of it, we will now get a chance to see them shine. Furthermore, this uncommon situation is such that we may even get to see the likes of Cap and Black Widow flinch.

When all said and done, so long as they stick the landing, I think they made the right choice.
