Avengers: Endgame Director Says To Expect A Very Different Film To Infinity War

Way back several years ago when Marvel’s Phase 3 slate was first announced, the two Avengers movies were listed as Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 & 2. Then we found out that the sequel movie would not, in fact, be called Part 2 and after much delay, we eventually got the title of Endgame. It might feel to fans like Endgame really is just part two of Infinity War, but according to co-director Joe Russo they will feel like very different movies for the audience. Russo recently spoke to Box Office Pro and said the following.

“It’s going to be a unique and singular experience in movie history, and people are going to want to share that experience together—even more than Infinity War, frankly.”

When asked about the tone and genre Endgame would utilize, Russo was understandably careful with his answer.

“That’s a tricky one to answer without giving anything away, but I will say that the movie is definitely unique in tone. It has its own spirit that’s different than Infinity War, which is why I was keen for us to separate the movies. Of course, we’re handing off narratives and it’s been serialized over 22 movies. But, it’s different tonally than Infinity War and it is told from a different point of view. It was important for us in our minds as film directors to separate those two because we do not want to make the same movie twice, and ways that you can differentiate films are through tone and point of view.”

Russo was also asked what it means for the heroes of Endgame to deal with the losses experienced in Infinity War.

“In Endgame, it’s exactly what you alluded to. What is the definition of “hero”? All four of those films, when looked at together, ask that question and try to answer that thematic: What does it mean to be a hero and what does it mean to stand up?”

I definitely expect there to be sacrifices in Endgame, for certain characters to have to make perhaps the ultimate sacrifice to rectify the wrongs of Thanos’ victory in Infinity War. If I had to guess, I’d guess that Cap will have the most focus in this movie and perhaps be the one most likely to give his life to save the others.

But we will have to wait a few more weeks yet to find out just how dramatically different Endgame is to Infinity War and judge for ourselves whether they were right to change the title.
