Avengers: Endgame Directors On How And When They Decided On Film’s Ending

With the quality of films brothers Joe and Anthony Russo have delivered for the Mavel Cinematic Universe fans have little worry that Avengers: Endgame will be as epic as its predecessor Avengers: Infinity War and provide an entertaining and poetic end to The Infinity Saga. To ensure this outcome the Russos employed the use of an absolutely insane idea, knowing where the story ends before setting out to tell it.

The siblings recently spoke with Collider and discussed their process, specifically how Endgame’s ending was one of the first aspects nailed down. “When we were working on both Infinity War and Endgame, the first thing we did was break the ending of Endgame,” co-director Joe Russo said. “Because we wanted to know where we were going. It’s very hard to tell a story if you don’t know where you’re going. So we have a very specific process with [writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely] where we spent months in a room just talking about a three-page outline. Literally, page one is act one, page two is act two, page three is act three. Because you have to know in a contained document like that, ‘Here’s where we start, here’s what happens in the middle, here’s where it ends.’ If you know that, it’s a lot easier to get to script. A more malleable format to work in a short outline like that, spend your time talking about it and thinking it through. We knew fairly early on how this was gonna’ end.”

Yes, mapping out a film, and especially a set of films seems like an excellent idea, I mean who in their right mind would set out to make more than one film, without knowing the general direction of where the story is headed, and where it ends (lookin at you Lucasfilm)?

This news puts me even more at ease that the film will deliver to fans an epic conclusion to the MCU (as we know it anyway).  Avengers: Infinity War left fans both dazzled and depressed, and it will be nearly impossible to deliver a film that will equal it, much less top it. However, if anyone can pull off a fantastic feat of filmmaking, it’s Joe and Anthony Russo.

Does knowing where a story ends help carve out the path to get there? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!
