Avengers: Endgame Has Passed Avatar’s Original Theatrical Run

Before I go any further in this article, I think it’s PARAMOUNT that I make the context clear. As of this writing, no, Avengers: Endgame has NOT passed up Avatar at the worldwide box office as a whole. James Cameron’s fantasy epic still holds the number one spot, and for all we know, will hang onto that spot for years to come. What we’re talking about is the film’s original theatrical run.

Given how long ago Avatar came out, it’s easy to forget that its box office total also includes the $33.2 million grossed for its special edition version in 2010, which featured nine minutes of extra footage — including an extended version of that already-awkward sex scene between Neytiri and Sully. Anyway, onto the news piece.

Avatar’s original haul ended at $2.749 billion worldwide. Now, as one redditor noted, Avengers: Endgame has actually passed up that original haul. Take a look down below:

Endgame has now surpassed Avatar’s original theatrical gross (before it was re-released). Endgame only has $38.3 million to surpass Avatar’s final gross now. from r/marvelstudios

Avengers: Endgame now has less than $40 million left before it defeats Avatar’s entire run, and with news hitting that they will be re-releasing the film with new footage very soon, can this be the final push needed to finally take down the titan that’s held onto this record for so long?

It is up to you and me to make it happen (or to let the record lie). What do you think? Will Avengers: Endgame actually outgross Avatar? Let us know your thoughts down below!
