Avengers: Endgame – That Captain America Mystery Was Intended To Be Just That [SPOILERS]

Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

There has been much discussion about Avengers: Endgame ever since it hit theaters just under a week ago. While I personally loved the film (it may be my favorite MCU film to date, but I’ll have to let it marinate for a bit before I say that conclusively), I still had some real issues with the time travel stuff. I thought I had a grip on how the time travel stuff worked, but then the ending hit.

I’m talking about one of the final scenes where we see Old Man Cap sitting on that park bench. All of a sudden, the entire idea of them going back in time and instantly creating a new reality seems to go out the window, right? That can be perceived as a pretty sizable plot hole. However, while the movie may not explain it, it sounds like directors Anthony and Joe Russo have a solid idea of the underpinnings of this whole thing, as was revealed to Yahoo!

Here’s what Joe Russo said:

“If Cap were to go back into the past and live there, he would create a branched reality. The question then becomes, how is he back in this reality to give the shield away? Interesting question, right? Maybe there’s a story there. There’s a lot of layers built into this movie and we spent three years thinking through it, so it’s fun to talk about it and hopefully fill in holes for people so they understand what we’re thinking.”

Okay, so if nothing else, this acknowledges that this whole thing wasn’t something they just brushed under the rug in hopes that we wouldn’t notice. It’s clear that they’ve thought of it, and while they didn’t explicitly state it, I get the impression they have an idea of what they think actually happened in the film. But why explain it? After all, Marvel Studios may very well explore it later down the line.
