Artists Pay Their Respects On Social Media To The Late John Singleton

Within hours of the tragic news that John Singleton had passed away after over a week on life support due a stroke-induced coma, big names from the film industry took a moment to recognize one of the great film-making talents in Hollywood history. At age 24, Singleton became the youngest person, and first African American ever, to be nominated for Best Director with his debut major motion picture Boyz N the Hood. Singleton’s early films Boyz N The HoodPoetic Justice, and Higher Learning exemplified the ’90s, focusing on the topics of race relations, gender roles, bigotry, sexuality, and inclusivity. Singleton’s work would continue on, both in film and television, as he branched out into producing. The Oscar-winner Hustle & Flow and FX series Snowfall are both Singleton productions.

Singleton leaves behind not only a loving family, but I wide fellowship of friends, coworkers, and admirers of his work. Below are just a few of those talented individuals:

“This one cuts deep. You’ll never be forgotten. Cause your work will live on.” – Lena Waithe (@LenaWaithe)

“John Singleton was an innovator – he came with drive & a creative vision when people of color didn’t have the same visibility we do now. He will remain a beacon of light in our community, and today we celebrate his legacy. Rest well my friend, we’ve lost one of the good guys.” – Halle Berry (@halleberry)

“God Bless this guy. John Singleton Damn. Such a nice guy.Talented guy. Generous. Gave so many people there big breaks. What a nice loyal guy he was. John Singleton literally gave me the opportunity of my career. Was so supportive and was my biggest fan making Higher Learning.” – Michael Rapaport (@MichaelRapaport)

“This is unbelievably heartbreaking. John, to know you & work so close along side you was a great honor. I will always cherish the memories of Higher Learning. You gave so much of yourself in your words & vision my sweet friend. You will be very missed by all #RIP #JohnSingleton.” – Kristy Swanson (@KristySwansonXO)

“John Singleton, director who spoke of creating stories that will illuminate the humanity of our people, African Americans past & present (Rosewood & Boyz N the Hood). He celebrated the contribution we make to the human diaspora. A true artist, legacy secured. RIP.” – Wendell Pierce (@WendellPierce)

“Mourning the loss of a collaborator & True Friend John Singleton. He blazed the trail for many young film makers, always remaining true to who he was & where he came from!!! RIP Brother. Gone Way Too Soon!” – Samuel L. Jackson (@SamuelLJackson)

“Farewell my filmmaking friend! Your Boyz story and your laser disc commentary inspired me back before I shot my first film. You made me believe I might be able to be like you: heard. Thank you for leading, John. Wish we had one last chance to talk comics again…” – Kevin Smith (@ThatKevinSmith)

“I was in high school when #boyznthehood came out. Didn’t know if I’d ever get to be directed by John Singleton, but I did…& now he’s gone. 51? #WayTooSoon. God bless you Black Man. Thank you for your passion, your talent, your joy…your humanity. We’ll try to keep it going in your absence.” – Sterling K. Brown (@sterlingkbrown)

“Rest In Power, my friend. One of the greatest to ever do it. Thank you GOD for blessing us with this gift better known as John Singleton. Having trouble finding enough words to share just what you mean to me. Will always love you John! Your spirit will forever shine bright.” – Regina King (@iamreginaking)

Sadly, this article cannot fit all the respects being paid as the posts on Twitter and Instagram continue to roll in. However, it is safe to say that Singleton touched so many lives in his 20+ years in the business. Whether it was a member of the production staff, an actor on set, or simply a fan of his work sitting at home, Singleton’s amazing impact on the film industry will be honored forever.

Rest in peace, John Singleton.
