Once again, warning for SPOILERS if you have not yet had the chance to check out Avengers: Endgame folks and since we are discussing the ending of Captain America, you know this one is going to be chock full of them!

Captain America was everyone’s top tip to be killed off or have to sacrifice himself in Avengers: Endgame. Whilst I could have definitely seen them going that way with the character I personally predicted some time ago, that a great ending for Cap would be to see him go back in time and his life with Peggy Carter (something I duly reminded my colleagues about after we had watched the movie).
For me it was the perfect ending for that character who has given everything, and had to miss out on the life he wanted. As we now know, Cap went back in time to deliver the Infinity Stones back into their own alternate timelines and whilst he was there, he decided to stick around and grow old with Peggy. I was a little worried about plot holes initially, but now it has been explained that Cap actually lived in an alternate timeline and then came back to his own as an old man. This satisfies the head canon for me on Cap’s return and also explains why the shield from his timeline is still intact.

Now Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have explained why this ending was always the one they had planned for Captain America. The writers recently spoke with New York Times and here is what they said about the ending of Captain America’s arc.
McFeely: From the very first outline, we knew he was going to get his dance. On a separate subject, I started to lose my barometer on what was just fan service and what was good for the character. Because I think it’s good for the characters. But we also just gave you what you wanted. Is that good? I don’t know. But I’ll tell you, it’s satisfying. He’s postponed a life in order to fulfil his duty. That’s why I didn’t think we were ever going to kill him. Because that’s not the arc. The arc is, I finally get to put my shield down because I’ve earned that.
Markus: A hero without sacrifice, you’re not going to get the miles out of that person that you need to for these movies. That’s what makes them a hero, it’s not the powers.
All in all, it was a perfect ending for Steve Rodgers, though I do wonder if he is now stuck in this timeline as an old man, with no access to any potential children he may have had. I also wonder what happened with Thanos and the Stones in the universe he remained in, but we can’t answer every question I suppose.
