Avengers: Infinity War – Why It Took So Long For Peter To [SPOILER]

Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

I’ll admit, I was ready to call B.S. on this one. While there were understandably many audience members who sat back in silence in those last three or so minutes of Avengers: Infinity War, I couldn’t help but feel like Marvel Studios had just emotionally manipulated the hell out of us. The capper? Poor Peter Parker’s scene — you know which one I’m talking about.

Over the course of the few minutes following Thanos snapping his fingers, we see countless superheroes turn to dust. Some get a few words in, but most of them fall apart before they can even complete a thought, let alone several seconds of fear. Enter Peter Parker. He had a chance to tell Tony he didn’t feel so good, apologize, and pretty much mourn his own passing before he went.

In the past, there has been speculation — speculation that was confirmed by directors Anthony and Joe Russo — that because of Spider-Man’s abilities, he was able to feel the death coming on before anyone else, and was therefore reacting to it before he passed. This meant that he wasn’t sensing it before it came on, but that his disintegration was just happening slower for dramatic effect. But I was ready to call B.S. In my watching of the film, I saw that he was slowly turning to dust the entire time he was whining. My “plot hole senses were tingling,” and I was ready to put them on blast here on the site…and then Joe Russo spoke on the commentary.

“If I remember correctly, right, it was ‘I don’t feel so good’ — Tony looked at him, he said, ‘I’m sorry,’ and disappeared. And at the end of the day, he kept driving to put more and more emotion into it. And just went up to Tom and said, ‘You don’t wanna go. You’re a child. And you’re using your strength as Spider-Man to fight this.’ And then that was the performance that came out.”

So yes, Peter did end up feeling this pain through his Spidey-senses early, but he also used his abilities to fight off the death as much as possible. Because he was a kid and didn’t want to go, he fought it with all his strength before he went, so that’s why it took so long. It’s a stretch of a reason…but I’ll allow it.

But what do you think? Do you buy it as much as I do? Let us know down below!
