Avengers: Joe Russo Says No One Can Replace Robert Downey Jr. As Iron Man

This year marks a decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actor Robert Downey Jr. has been there since the beginning, playing one of the most important heroes in the MCU, Iron Man. So what does the future hold for the actor and the character? One half of the film’s directing duo, Joe Russo (the other half is his brother Anthony) recently spoke with the Hindustan Times and discussed how irreplaceable Downey Jr. is within the MCU.

“‘There is nobody who can take over Iron Man from Robert,’ Russo told the outlet. ‘I am sure there are lots other things he wants to do in his career. But he loves playing the character, I know that, and we love working together. We will see where it goes from here. Robert is an incredible leader. He is a very warm and inclusive human being. He is great in keeping everyone’s spirits high and making everyone feel invited in the process… In the healthy creative space.'”

Having been around since the start of the shared universe, both Downey Jr. and Iron Man are comforting sights to Marvel fans. Assuming he survives the next two Avengers films, I believe Downey Jr. will stick around for quite a while, but that his role within the universe will be reduced. A smaller overall role in the MCU would allow Downey Jr. to pursue other projects if he so desired, and also allow him to continue to play Iron Man.
