Avengers: The Kang Dynasty To Be Directed By Destin Daniel Cretton

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty writer Jeff Loveness is not yet sure if he'll get to use the Fantastic Four or Blade

According to THR, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton who helmed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Before anyone asks, no, there is currently no reports suggesting Cretton will also helm Secret Wars.

Here is the report from THR:

Destin Daniel Cretton who helmed last year’s Marvel hit Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has come aboard to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively reveal.

Cretton is already well ensconced in the Marvel family. In addition to directing Shang-Chi, which grossed $432 million worldwide, he has an overall deal with Marvel that he signed in the wake of Shang-Chi’s success. As part of that, he is developing, with Andrew Guest, a writer-producer on comedies such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community, a live-action series featuring Wonder Man that he will exec produce and possibly direct an episode or more of. He also has a Shang-Chi sequel in the works.

THR also says,

It is unclear who is writing the Kang Dynasty Avengers movie or what heroes would even make up the team’s roster for a story that helps close out Phase 6.

After the report hit, Marvel Insider Charles Murphy also posted this on social media.

It therefore seems that Cretton is indeed not on writing duties for The Kang Dynasty. As for Cretton’s skills behind the camera? I personally think Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was one of the best Phase 4 Marvel movies. I’m therefore keen to see more, and it looks like we will. There’s at least two Disney+ series in the works and a sequel for Shang-Chi being developed.

I may be wrong, but I would have thought the Shang-Chi sequel would be ideally out before The Kang Dynasty. There are several slots still to be filled for Phase 6. However who knows, perhaps the Shang-Chi sequel could be one of the films that begins Phase 7? One thing seems clear, there won’t be a Shang-Chi sequel as one of the movie bridging Avengers 5 and 6. I’m not sure Cretton could pull off filming two projects at the same time after all.
