Things have not been to great on the James Rhodes front. He may still be donning a suit alongside Iron Man, but we can’t forget that the last time he suited up, he ended up getting paralyzed from the waist down. From what we’ve seen so far, he is up and running again, but only thanks to the tech from Stark. To have to go up against another threat…we can only imagine how that must feel for him.
“That’s gonna be a thing for him to put that suit back on,” Cheadle told ComingSoon.net in reference to him gearing up in Avengers: Infinity War. “Last time he was in it, it didn’t go so well… I think it’s something that he’s fighting to put behind him. But absolutely, it creeps up. Don’t want certain people behind me. I’m gonna keep an eye on everybody, I wanna keep that jewel in front of me, not behind me.”

But what about the threat? While Rhodey has been around for a while, he’s never actually gone up against an otherworldly threat. As a military man, his feet have usually been planted firmly on the ground. So how does he handle all this outer space stuff?
“I think as always we’ve seen that Rhodey would prefer to deal with real-world things and that’s kind of what he understands. And when we start leaving the planet and talking about things coming from outer space, he’s like, ‘Dude, I don’t even know what that, what is that? I know how to fight guys and in tanks and weapons and that. I’m… don’t, that’s something that’s beyond my pay grade.’ But he’s been thrown into the deep end, so they all are in a way in this one. So everybody’s gonna have to figure it out on their feet.”
It goes without saying that everyone will be working above their pay grade when Thanos comes into town. When the fate of the universe is at stake, you can’t exactly shy away from it.
