No, you didn’t misread this, and no, it’s not 1999. Yes, the Spice Girls are back, and they’re shopping around an interesting-sounding project. According to Variety, they are shopping around an animated film project starring the Spice Girls.
So if you were hoping to see the five legitimately unite on the silver screen for the first time since the unequivocally excellent and high-quality Spice World, you’re in luck, so long as you’re okay with them being animated. The outlet’s source, each member of the group has signed away their likeness for the film, and each character will be voiced by a Spice Girl.
In case you’ve left the 1990s and 2000s in your rearview mirror, the members include Victoria Beckham (“Posh Spice”), Melanie Brown (“Scary Spice”), Emma Bunton (“Baby Spice”), Melanie Chisholm (“Sporty Spice”) and Geri Halliwell (“Ginger Spice”). Each character will also feature a “girl power” that is unique to that specific member, and will also reflect their personality. Apparently, the Spice Girls are “fired up about the idea.”
The source continued, saying:
“The Spice Girls are thinking big in terms of a franchise on a global scale. They’re the most successful girl group on the planet. It’s just what Marvel or Disney needs.”
If nothing else, I think we can all agree that this goes down in history as the most predictable piece of information to come out in the past several years. When we woke up this morning, we all knew that this would be the day we’d be getting a Spice Girls superhero movie, right?
