Awkwafina Discusses The Farewell’s Oscars Snub And Nora From Queens

In case you missed the talk all over the web, not everyone has been happy with the way the Academy Award nominations have panned out. The Best Director category is filled only with males, Adam Sandler didn’t get a nod, and the critically-acclaimed The Farewell did not receive any love from the Academy.

The film, starring Awkwafina, received rave reviews for its compelling story and the lead actress’ performance. Given the film’s recent wins (including a Best Actress Golden Globe for Awkwafina and the American Film Institute calling it the “movie of the year”), it was a surprise to see the film not receive at least a few Oscar nominations.

But Awkwafina herself seems to be taking the news just fine. While at the Television Critics Association discussing her new Comedy Central series Nora From Queens, Awkwafina was asked how she felt about The Farewell‘s Oscar snubs.

“We appreciated the run of the film since it came out last January at Sundance and all the attention it’s gotten,” she said, pointing out that the Oscar nominations were warranted and that there were a number of incredible films this year, including The Farewell. “I feel very grateful where we’ve come from.”

Awkwafina is now focused on her next project: Nora From Queens, which Deadline with the following synopsis:

Inspired by her own life (her real name is Nora Lum) growing up in Queens, NY, the series features BD Wong as her supportive dad, Lori Tan Chinn as her spunky grandma and Bown Yang her overachieving cousin. As the titular Nora, Awkwafina leans on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in the Outer Borough.

Nora From Queens debuts on Comedy Central on January 22nd, and has already been renewed for a second season.
