Last year was the year of actor Ben Affleck waffling. If you thought him not fully committing to directing The Batman standalone film was bad enough, then 2017 was even worse. Affleck officially dropped out as director, and the future of his tenure in the DC Extended Universe was brought into question.

Now, Affleck and Batman are the new Ross and Rachel of today’s fandom (I’m so sorry for that analogy). When last we heard, Affleck was pretty much out, and was only sticking around to push Justice League, but one man that was on the backburner just in case was rumored to be Jake Gyllenhaal.

Now, outlet Revenge of the Fans has word from a source that Gyllenhaal is likely to take on the role — but it sounds like the ball is still in Affleck’s court.

“Gyllenhaal is probably Batman. Affleck is not out of it yet. That’s the thing, he still has a contract. But the studio is sour on him. If Ben rolls, Jake is in. Kind of a weird web. These guys both know they control each other’s destiny.”

Kind of a non-story, given that we still have no solid details. However, with Warner Bros. still taking smaller steps with this world, this isn’t something they have to rush out to get done. With director Matt Reeves stating that they’re just in the process of outlining the film, they have plenty of time for this to play out. No need to announce anything prematurely before they have a script of the film set in stone.

Do you want Gyllenhaal to take the role from Affleck already? Let us know your thoughts down below!
