Batman Spinoff Series Headed To HBO Max, Will Be Connected To Matt Reeves’ The Batman

The Batman Test Screening Descriptions Plus DC Fandome Teaser

The world of Batman will head to the small screen again in series form.

So, you can file this one under unexpected. Unexpected, weird, and kinda cool. We have all been waiting for a new Batman film for years, and have had various TV shows hold us over, including Gotham. But what if we were to get a streaming TV show that connected to an upcoming Batman movie? Namely, what if we got a streaming series that connected to Matt Reeves’ The Batman? It sounds like we won’t have to wait much longer. That’s exactly what we’re getting.

THR is reporting that Matt Reeves is bringing us a new police procedural series set in the world of Gotham City. It will be set in the same world as his Batman film. As such, it will feature Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. Or it could be Detective Gordon. It’s not clear how old or far along as a character he will be. There is also no word if Robert Pattinson will pop in and out.

Terence Winter, who created the series Boardwalk Empire, will run the show. As such, he has experience creating a seedy underbelly, and will likely be a good fit for this Gotham-set series — which is being referred to informally as Gotham Central.

According to HBO Max, this show is “set in the world Reeves is creating for The Batman feature film and will build upon the motion picture’s examination of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, ultimately launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms. The series provides an unprecedented opportunity to extend the world established in the movie and further explore the myriad of compelling and complex characters of Gotham.”

“This is an amazing opportunity, not only to expand the vision of the world I am creating in the film, but to explore it in the kind of depth and detail that only a longform format can afford,” said Reeves in a statement. “And getting to work with the incredibly talented Terence Winter, who has written so insightfully and powerfully about worlds of crime and corruption, is an absolute dream.”

Weird, right? I don’t know about you, but I very much expected Gotham to be more like what this show is being pitched as. Obviously, Gotham ended up being very different. Perhaps, with this new series, we’ll get something that’s more in line with our initial expectations.
