‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Runtime Revealed

With every waking hour that passes, it seems like we get a new revelation for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” the next film in DC’s own cinematic universe. Unlike Marvel, who revealed their shared universe one movie at a time, DC plans to front-load a great deal of information and characters in this next picture–which is only the second in their series. While many fear that this will result in an overstuffed film (not unlike the recent “Amazing Spider-Man 2”), there’s no way of knowing until we actually see the movie. One thing everyone can agree on, however, is that “Batman v Superman” hasits work cut out for it.

Not only will the movie bring a climactic battle between the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight, but it will also introduce Wonder Woman, other superheroes, as well as the entire concept of the Justice League. Indeed, one of the many questions that hits fans minds is, “Just how long will this movie be?” All the Marvel movies (with the exception of the “Avengers” flicks) run around two hours apiece, give or a take. Can we expect something comparable?

According to the site DC Comics Movie, we can expect “Batman v Superman” to be quite the hefty film indeed. Pre-orders are apparently up for Germany, and the country lists the runtime for the film as 151 minutes, which translates to two hours and 31 minutes.

While this may seem to imply a bloated film, this is par for the course for a DC picture. With the exception of 2011’s “Green Lantern” movie, which clocked in at 114 minutes, every DC superhero film in recent memory has been over 140 minutes, and often times way over that.

“Superman Returns”: 154 minutes
“Batman Begins”: 140 minutes
“The Dark Knight”: 158 minutes
“Watchmen”: 162 minutes (with a 186-minute director’s cut and a 215-minute “ultimate cut”)
“The Dark Knight Rises”: 162 minutes
“Man of Steel”: 143 minutes

All that being said, the runtime for this movie doesn’t seem like a huge surprise. As much as I love the Marvel films, DC movies have usually had weightier themes and more complex characters, so it makes sense that this one would be about two-and-a-half hours in length. Given all that, and all that “Batman v Superman” has to accomplish, one has to wonder if 151 minutes is enough time.

What do you think? Is 151 minutes enough time, or is it too long for your liking? Let us know your thoughts down below!

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
