Birds Of Prey: Producers Spoke With A Lot Of Male Directors For The Job Too

Without a doubt, we are in a transformative era in the film industry. While we still have a long way to go, the opportunities for female creatives are opening up like never before. Of course, as with all things, there’s been a bit of backlash from certain people, who feel that, in attempts to even the playing field, they’ve closed off doors for qualified men to helm some of these movies. Some upcoming comic book movies have been accused of that, including Birds of Prey.

And, to be fair, there does seem to be a lot of extra effort put into looking for female directors.

“With everything LuckyChap does, we put in way more effort looking into female writers and directors for our projects,” Birds of Prey star and producer Margot Robbie told Variety. “Because we can put together a writers list or directors list of male names like that [snaps fingers]. To come up with a female list takes longer because they haven’t had the same opportunities, or aren’t in that position yet.”

But that’s not to say they’re not open to male directors.

“For “I, Tonya,” we spoke to a lot of male directors,” Robbie continued, “and we spoke to a lot of female directors — a lot. Craig [Gillespie] was the best person for the job. He understood the characters, he understood the world. Same thing with “Birds of Prey” — we spoke to a lot of people. Spoke to much more high level male directors. But they weren’t right for it the way Cathy [Yan] was.”

The interviewer went on to ask what it was about Yan that made her perfect for the role.

“I loved [Yan’s] movie ‘Dead Pigs,’” Robbie said, “because it had an ensemble cast, and I felt I had many moments with every single one of those characters, which I think is a hard thing to do in an ensemble. The world she created in “Dead Pigs” also had a stylistic flair to it. It’s reality, it’s in China modern day. But it had a specific style that was kind of identifiable for that film, which I thought was something we needed for this film.”

Robbie continued, “And then she came in to pitch, and she pitched really well. She had great ideas, she identified plot points that, you know, felt a little clunky, perhaps — and then had great solutions as to how to address them. She spoke to the aesthetic color palette, how she wanted to shoot action, how she wanted costume design to be reflective of the characters’ personalities. It was perfect.”

I, for one, am pretty interested to see how this turns out. Both trailers have completely caught my interest, and I can only hope the movie is as fun and weird as it looks. Of course, that’s not enough to carry a film, as you have to nail the character aspect and emotional core. Fingers crossed they can do that.

As with all creative projects, I hope they chose the best person for the job, but to me, the work seems promising so far. What about you? Let us know your thoughts down below!
