Birds Of Prey: Why Margot Robbie Wanted To An R-Rated Female Ensemble Action Movie

You’ve probably noticed about now that the upcoming Birds of Prey movie isn’t really strictly a Birds of Prey story. It’s a Harley Quinn story that features some aspects of Birds of Prey in it. This is something that has seemingly rubbed some fans the wrong way, but the reason for that is the film has its roots in producer and star Margot Robbie, who plays the role of Harley Quinn.

“I’d been thinking for quite some time how there was a real gap in the market for a female ensemble action film,” Robbie told Variety. “And I love action films, and I think there’s a misconception perhaps subconsciously for people: action films are for dudes, girls don’t really like them. Which is just not true. I love them! I know heaps of other women who love them. I loved movies like the Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu “Charlie’s Angels” growing up. So I knew I wanted to find that, and help put that on screen somewhere.”

Okay, so that makes sense. When it comes to female ensemble, there is definitely an untapped market. But how did she stumble upon Birds of Prey?

“And then while I was researching Harley [for Suicide Squad],” Robbie continued, “I was devouring the comics. I became kind of obsessed with them at some point. I stopped reading just Harley comics, and that rabbit hole led me to the “Birds of Prey” comics. It seemed like a good platform for a female ensemble franchise, because so many different characters come in and out of the Birds of Prey. And Harley is an easy character to insert into almost any situation, because no matter what, she’s gonna just stir s— up. And I wanted to do an R-rated film, which took a bit of convincing because at that point “Deadpool” wasn’t out.”

That last part is pretty interesting to me. While we didn’t hear about this movie until after Suicide Squad (which came out after Deadpool), it’s easy to forget that this has been gestating for a longer period of time than it seems.

With this in mind, I’m more intrigued than ever to check it out, as I think it’ll feature a kind of unique style and tone that we haven’t seen too often. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. It almost looks like an indie film that was given a more action-oriented premise and a few extra bucks.
