Birds Of Prey, The Suicide Squad Expected To Get R Ratings

Slowly, but surely, it looks as though Warner Bros. and DC are finally finding their voices with their superhero movies. It was clear during the Snyder regime that the orders from up top were to replicate the Marvel Studios formula and try to rush to a team-up film before audiences were actually even attached to them (hence the “Dawn of Justice” aspect of Batman v Superman). But now, several films later, it seems as though they finally have their footing.

Wonder Woman was a hit, Shazam! a joy, and Aquaman and Joker both made over $1 billion, which is huge for a studio whose only other character who made that much money before was Batman — and one of those movies is rated R! Big emphasis on that last part there, because it looks like it’ll play a big role going forward.

Marvel Studios has always been adamant that their properties retain PG-13 in nature, but according to Variety, DC isn’t looking to replicate that. Even within its DC Extended Universe, it seems they are open to allowing R-rated pictures. First up, we have Birds of Prey, the girl gang movie that is expected to get such a rating. And then we have James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, another film looking to fill that R-rated void.

In short, DC seems to be realizing that they can succeed in satisfying a market that Marvel isn’t, rather than trying to out-Marvel Marvel, which is a solid approach, in my humble opinion.

For a film like The Suicide Squad, this is a huge relief. There was a massive amount of potential with that first film that was stunted by the studio’s unwillingness to go all-in. This also adds an extra bit of tension to the casting announcement James Gunn made this past September, where he urged viewers not to get attached to the new Task Force X.

Now we can imagine a myriad of horrifying ways these guys can go out.

How do you feel about DC potentially going the R-rated route for films that could benefit? Let us know your thoughts down below!
