Good news, DC fans. At the very least, Birds of Prey will have one hell of an actor taking them on as Black Mask. According to Deadline, the Scottish actor will be playing the lead villain in the female-led superhero team-up flick. This comes over a month after both McGregor and Sharlto Copley were rumored to be in the mix for the part.
He was created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake and made his first appearance in DC Comics’ Batman #386 in August 1985. Black Mask is a Gotham mob boss and leader of the False Face Society. His real name is Roman Sionis and he has often gone after Bruce Wayne — the billionaire dude, not necessarily Batman, which is a cool distinction.

This time around, he’ll be taking on Huntress, Black Canary, Cassandra Cain, and Harley Quinn. McGregor will be joining a cast that includes Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, among others. Helming the project is Cathy Yan, who confirmed earlier this week that they’d be shooting for R-rating with this movie.
Personally, I don’t think you could have hoped for a better actor to take on Black Mask. Even to this day, I maintain McGregor was the saving grace of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, and while he tried his damndest to save them, he could only do so much. Given that they have a finished script for this movie, though, I hope McGregor and co. were actually able to read, and that it was a big reason why they all signed on. The DC doesn’t need another controversial movie.
