Birds Of Prey’s R Rating Was Never A Big Deal

Birds of Prey is inching up on its February 7 release date, and with that, it has been confirmed that the movie is, in fact, rated R. Of course, we have reported extensively on this point in the past, but it does always seem like this stuff is in the air until we actually see that MPA logo either on posters or at the tail end of TV spots.

But, yes, the film is rated R, and with that, you always have to wonder whether or not this was a big deal to the studio. In the past, PG-13 has always seemed like a much safer bet, and it wasn’t until the past few years that we’ve seen the industry rise above the preconceived notion.

“I honestly don’t think [it was a problem] as much as anyone would think. It was never really a conversation; not a big deal,” director Cathy Yan told CinemaBlend about the rating.

From the sound of it, though, it allowed the characters to be true to themselves.

“Harley’s not really someone to hold back. The R-rating really allowed us to take it to the next level with fight scenes,” star Margot Robbie told Variety.

“I think it’s totally uninhibited in every way,” co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead said. “That’s what it felt like shooting it. We got to do whatever we wanted. We got to improv. We’re throwing around curse words.”

Sounds like a lot of fun, and while I know there is plenty of trepidation and hate for Birds of Prey — before it’s even come out — I’m hopeful and excited that this’ll be a great time in theaters. But what do you think of the R rating? Let us know down below!
