Birds Of Prey: How Their Costumes Were Chosen Differently Than In Other Films

In the past, women haven’t always had the best costumes. I mean, sure they had some comic book accurate costumes, but more often than not, it meant they had to squeeze into tight leather outfits that are quite possibly the least practical things in existence. Even Black Widow had to suffer through that in those early Marvel films became a bit more practical, and Harley Quinn had to suffer a similar fate in Suicide Squad.

In the past, Birds of Prey star and producer Margot Robbie has called this the result of the male gaze. While she has never fully dissed anyone about having to wear the hotpants in Suicide Squad, it’s become clear this isn’t a pattern to be repeated in the new female-centric film — though it wasn’t to make a statement.

“The female gaze just happened inherently because there were mainly women making the decisions,” Robbie told Glamour. “We were all just picking what we thought was cool.”

It just so happened that what looked cool to them was less male-centric fan service.

“I didn’t feel objectified,” co-star Rosie Perez said. “I’m the oldest one here, and I was dreading the wardrobe. When I saw [my button-down shirt and trousers], I went, ‘Oh!’ Then, when I saw the other girls, I was like, ‘You look hot! You look hot! You look hot! Yay!’ I was happy. You could be sexy, but you didn’t have to put on the sexiness.”
