Inspiration can come out of anywhere. Time and time again we have talked to countless comic book creators about what inspired them to create certain characters. Sometimes the answers are very reasonable, while others are eyebrow-raising and comical.
Such is the case for the God/Eternal, Eon. This classic Marvel Comics character was created by the legendary comic book creator Jim Starlin. This week our very own Jace of The Comic Source Podcast had the pleasure of interviewing him for a project he is working on. During that conversation, Starlin revealed where he got his inspiration for Eon.

“I looked at this garbage bag that was on the street corner which had this grease stain on it. The grease stain was such a fascinating shape that I sort of stared at it for a moment until I saw what I thought it would be. That’s how Eon from the metamorphosis Captain Marvel came about. I just got home that day, sketched him up and by the end of the week he was part of the story.”
Eon first appeared in Marvel Comics on September 1st, 1973 in Captain Marvel #28. He is said to be one of the first beings in the universe after the big bang. He was the offspring of Infinity, Eternity, and the Celestial Axis. His purpose was to nurture the evolution of sentient life of the universe and to maintain favorable conditions for life in the universe. Eon came to the conclusion that the universe would need a protector and thus created the Quantum Bands.
