The Batman – Will Colin Farrell’s Penguin Wear Prosthetics?

Oswald Cobblepot, better known as Penguin is one of the Dark Knight’s oldest foes. The monocled, umbrella-wielding villain made his debut in Detective Comics #58 way back in 1941. Actor Colin Farrell has been cast as the Cobblepot in Matt Reeves’ long-in-development and highly anticipated film, The Batman.

Not long ago photos of Farrell from the set made their way online. Today’s news comes from an unlikely source in Broadway actor Rob McClure. The actor is set to star in the Broadway version of Mrs. Doubtfire. In a video posted on Reddit by user PeteysParker, McClure talks about seeing prosthetics that he was told were for Colin Farrell’s Penguin while checking out his own Doubtfire prosthetics.

Even though I personally believe this to be true, take this with at least a small grain of salt.

The Penguin is traditionally depicted as a portly fellow with some small, but noticeable deformities. These unattractive attributes complement the moniker that’s attached to him. The first on-screen version was played by Burgess Meredith in the old 1966 Batman TV show. This iteration is probably the most accurate depiction of the character as far as the old comics.

I enjoy the weirdness of Tim Burton, but I think he went too far with Danny DeVito’s Penguin in Batman Returns. This version of the character was just too grotesque, and a little too Tim Burtony in my opinion.

Most recently the character appeared on the Batman prequel show, Gotham. Actor Robin Lord Taylor played the villain in the Fox series and played it quite brilliantly I might add. Taylor’s version of Penguin just might be my favorite iteration of the character.
