Black Adam May End Up Getting Delayed

It’s been roughly 161 years since Dwayne Johnson signed on to play the villain and antihero Black Adam. In fact, it’s been so long that, at first, it initially seemed like Black Adam would get his own film before his heroic counterpart, Shazam. Of course, a few years back, Shazam! went from zero to in-production fairly quickly, paving the way for the Black Adam to pop in later down the line. But when would it actually happen?

I was obviously kidding when I said Johnson signed on 161 years ago, but it’s legit been on board play the character since around 2007. Since then, the Shazam! film was canceled, the DCEU rose up, and all this time later, we have yet to see him suit up. Recently, the Black Adam film snagged Jaume Collet-Serra as director, and it seemed well on the way to production.

So, what’s the current status?

“I’m very excited about Black Adam by the way, I’ve been training very, very hard for that role,” Johnson said in an Instagram Q&A. “We were supposed to start shooting it in the summer, in July, and we’ll see. I’m not quite too sure if it’s still gonna happen, or, at least, if we’ll still start shooting in July but it will all work out the way it’s meant to work out.”

Of course, the big reason for the lack of confidence in the July start date has to do with the COVID-19 pandemic. The novel coronavirus has spent the past month delaying productions, film releases, and canceling in-person events.

As of this writing, the future of the entire world is a bit questionable. We have no idea when the pandemic will let up or when the world will be able to go back to normal. As such, it’s difficult to say when productions will be able to commence. We reported last week that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was still on track to hit its June production date. We don’t know if the studio will follow through with that, but as it stands, it makes sense for everyone to continue on as if those dates will happen.

Perhaps in another month or two we’ll have a better idea, but until then, it makes financial sense to assume the films wills be good to go as planned. But will that be the case for Black Adam? I hope so.
