Black Panther: Chadwick Boseman Reiterates They’re Aiming For Best Picture, Not Best Popular Film

While it’s still up in the air whether or not there will actually be a Best Popular Film category at the Oscars next year, that hasn’t stopped discussion surrounding the potential. As it stands, there seems to be little enthusiasm for the category, as it is little more than an obvious ploy for ratings on the part of the academy.

As such, it’s no surprise that this year’s Black Panther has no ambition to lock down that award. As we’ve reported previously, the folks over at Marvel seem willing and able to make a push to see that flick obtain the highest prize at the Oscars: Best Picture. To do this, there has been talk about really emphasize the personal nature of the film to director Ryan Coogler.

If you needed anyone else’s conversation, speaking with THR, the film’s star Chadwick Boseman has also expressed his knowledge on the subject, saying:

“We don’t know what it [the new prize] is, so I don’t know whether to be happy about it or not. What I can say is that there’s no campaign [that we are mounting] for popular film; like, if there’s a campaign, it’s for best picture, and that’s all there is to it.”

“A good movie is a good movie, and clearly it doesn’t matter how much money a movie makes in order for it to be ‘a good movie’ [in the minds of Academy members] because if [it did], the movies that get nominated and win [which have tended in recent years to not be blockbusters] wouldn’t get nominated; and if it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter on both sides. For my money, the only thing that matters is the level of difficulty.”

Preach, Chadwick, preach!

Given all the negative talk surrounding this, I would be incredibly surprised if this Popular Film category actually happens, but you never know. It’s not like the Academy Awards have a history of actually being in touch with what people are feeling and saying.
