For me, one of the few acceptable crossovers from the world of WWE to blockbuster films is Dave Bautista, the other of course being The Rock. Now well known for playing Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, he will soon appear on the screen in the upcoming sci-fi film, Blade Runner 2049. In an interview with LRM’s own Gig Patta, Bautista talked about how he felt when he found out he had been cast in Blade Runner 2049:

“When I first heard that I actually got the part…[laughs]…it was amazing. I was filming Guardians of the Galaxy Part 2, I was already running high and I really loved everybody from that film. They knew I’ve done the screen test while I was still filming Guardians. I got to share it with all of them. It was a really exciting feeling. I really didn’t start working on a regular basis after the first Guardians. They knew on how passionate I was about it. I was struggling to work and I got to share it with them. There was a big sense of elation and a sense of accomplishment.”

Sounds like a great experience for Bautista, sharing the big news with a group that has likely become family to him. Bautista has been great in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Drax’s naivety has been the source of some great comedy and fits in with the feel of the films overall quite well.

Be sure to come back and check out LRM’s full interview with Bautista tomorrow!

I remember when they were eyeing Jason Mamoa for this, and I was really disappointed we he stepped away from the role.

But I think Bautista has been wonderful as Drax! I love seeing him talk about how much of a fanboy he is and how much he loves working on the Marvel films. Now it’s great to see that his career has really been taking off thanks to that role. Good for Dave!

Dave is a really lovable guy and I don’t know a single person that doesn’t root for him. But…While I don’t know the guy’s real age, he looks way older than The Rock and he has less natural charisma (who does have more than the Rock though?!). I don’t think it’s a surprise for Bautista to take this long to get working regularly in acting…He won’t be a fit everywhere.

That said, I do think Bautista is a better fit for dramatic and art house roles. I think it’d be too hard for The Rock to tone it down for an entire film. Mind you I guess Robin Williams could for “Good Will Hunting” and “One Hour Photo”.

Don’t compare the two or we might get the Rock cast in a remake of Good Morning Vietnam.

Maybe Baustista can get cast as Shazaam and he can have an epic smack down with The Rock.
