Bob Iger Blames Lack Of Executive Supervision For The Marvels Box Office Failure

In what I think is a rather loaded statement, Disney CEO Bob Iger blames lack of executive supervisions for The Marvels box office failure. There’s no doubt Disney’s 2023 has been a poor year overall in terms of box office. The Marvels itself is turning out to be a huge flop. Bob Iger, now back in charge of Disney is tasked with remedying this situation. However, for me, Iger throws the creatives who made The Marvels under the bus with his latest comments.

Iger’s comments came during the recent DealBook Summit, we got the information courtesy of The Verge. He was talking about why The Marvels failed to engage audiences at the box office.

The Marvels was shot during Covid, and there wasn’t enough supervision on set [from executives.”

So, what Iger is saying here, is that the creatives were left to run wild and they didn’t make a good movie. That some more executive supervision would have ensured a better movie. Why not just sack all the creatives and get your executives to make your movies then Bob? I mean, the reputation of Marvel Studios execs is good, but that’s rarely the case for most studios.

Also, from what we’ve heard Marvel execs had quite an influence on cutting things from this movie that were shot. Then add another factor to this debate. So far audience scores and critic scores for The Marvels are not that bad. I haven’t come across many fans who hated it. Instead, a lot are saying they were already fed up with Marvel before hand. So was that the fault of the likes of director Nia Da Costa as well?

This just feels like Iger is passing the blame for this failure on to those easiest to remove. In other words the actual creatives themselves. Iger also talked about how releasing too much content had allowed certain projects to get away from them. Reiterating that Marvel Studios will have less to produce each year and can now focus on quality again. In other words, ‘now Bob is back, we’ll make better movies, please come back to theaters.’

Was The Falcon and The Winter Soldier having terrible villains due to lack of executive supervision? How about the poor CGI and the tonal shifts in She-Hulk? Was the horrible ending to a decent start in Secret Invasion also the fault of the creatives?

What do you think of his comments as Disney CEO Bob Iger blames lack of executive supervisions for The Marvels box office failure. I’m not buying it, what about you? Thoughts below as always.
