Bourne Producer Says He Hopes To Restart The Series Soon

It’s been roughly four years since we’ve seen Jason Bourne punch someone’s throat in. Before that, we saw the franchise take an unwelcome turn with The Bourne Legacy. Sadly, as beloved as the series had become, these last two outings haven’t done much to reignite enthusiasm for the franchise as a whole. Both of those movies were an attempt to bring in new and old fans alike, and both missed the mark, making Jason Bourne’s future fairly uncertain.

That’s not to say the demand isn’t there. Audiences seem to be just as hungry for good spy movies as ever. It’s just a matter of making them good enough to conform to modern taste. In spite of the brand of Bourne, the past couple of movies simply weren’t up to snuff for most audiences. They need to evolve in order to survive in today’s landscape. From the sound of it, that’s what they’re hoping to do going forward.

“I do like the Bourne series,” producer Frank Marshall told Collider, “and I do think that’s an opportunity for different filmmakers to come in now. So, I’m hoping that we can find a new story for Bourne and a new filmmaker. We are looking.”

As with any film, I do think it’s a matter of finding the right filmmaker with the right kind of story. As the 2010s have proven, unless you have one with a clear, unique, and modern vision, audiences won’t take to it. Yes, the Bourne series was iconic in the 2000s, but resting on the laurels of that original trilogies will do no one any good.

While Marshall didn’t give the outlet any specific timeline, the fact that they seem open to the idea of more movies should be good news for spy fans. While I haven’t been keen on the Bourne series since the original trilogy, I could go for more. We don’t have an awful lot of these movies these days, and perhaps with the right director, we could get something that can stand toe-to-toe with the Mission: Impossible franchise.

What do you think of there being more Bourne films? Do you think they should finally move beyond Matt Damon? Let us know your thoughts down below!
