Dawnshard is well on its way to becoming a reality.
Brandon Sanderson has only just finished the final draft of Rhythm of War, but he’s already neck-deep in his next project. The project in question is Dawnshard, a novella set between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War that hits this October. Yeah, that’s right. The book is hitting in just a few months and he’s only just getting around to it. But don’t take this as me having a lack of confidence in the guy. If his track record is any indication, that will give him plenty of time to churn this bad boy out before moving on to bigger things.
In fact, given how short Dawnshard is looking, it doesn’t seem like it’ll take more than a few weeks to finish up. How do we know this? Brandon Sanderson took to Twitter to update his progress on many of his projects across the board. In addition to giving us a copyediting progress of Rhythm of War, he shared that he’s 20% through Dawnshard.
“Roughly 7k words done on the new Stormlight Novella for Kickstarter backer,” Sanderson wrote. “I’m guessing this at around 20%, but I won’t know for sure until I get more done. It is fun so far, though!”

While we don’t quite know what the finished word count will be, this book is on its way to hitting roughly 35,000 words. At that length, it falls squarely into the novella length, which is perfect. It would also make it oh-so-slightly shorter than Edgedancer, the other Stormlight Archive novella, which was around 40,000 words.
But that’s not all. During a livestream last week, Sanderson discussed what we could expect from the new Stormlight Archive story. We already knew that it would follow the Thaylen merchant Rysn, but another character could be getting some of the spotlight as well.
“Right now, Rysn, probably Lopen as a secondary viewpoint character, is my guess,” Sanderson said during the livestream. “But I haven’t written it yet, so I have to see how the viewpoints work out.”
