Brandon Sanderson Wraps Dawnshard First Draft, Gives Release And Viewpoint Updates

Dawnshard is done, now here is the release update.

Earlier this week, author Brandon Sanderson revealed he was approaching the climax of the novella Dawnshard. It was unclear to me if he planned on finishing the story or climax by today. Now, it looks like his intentions are clear. The author took to Facebook late last night to share that he has officially wrapped the first draft of the Stormlight Archive story. He then went on to break down the perspective viewpoints and planned release.

“And…Wrap!” Sanderosn wrote. “Dawnshard, the Stormlight novella happening between books three and four, is done! (First Draft, at least.) 40k words and change. About 75% Rysn viewpoints, 25% Lopen. I’ll do a longer post on the Kickstarter update page soon, outlining the rest of the schedule. Goal is still to get the digital version out in October to those who kickstarted it. (Note for those who didn’t grab it during the kickstarter: we’ll do a normal digital release on various ebook stores once we’ve confirmed that Kickstarter people have gotten theirs. Hopefully early November. A separate audiobook release is also likely, but not until next year, if you want to wait for that.) Next up, Skyward 3! (Then Wax and Wayne 4.)”

I, for one, am very interested to see how Lopen’s narrative thread is weaved into the story. When I think of the Thaylen merchant Rysn, I don’t necessarily think of Lopen. As such, I’m eager to see how it all comes together. What is it about this story that will line up these two perspectives? Luckily, we don’t have long to wait.

It was also nice to get an update on his schedule. Skyward is an obvious next book for him, but Mistborn fans will be thrilled to see him returning to Wax and Wayne 4 right after. Given Sanderson’s pacing, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was working on the novel come June of next year.
