Yes, the life of an actor may seem perfect and glamorous, but it definitely has its fair share of cons. You’re constantly flying around the world, spending 12-16 hour days on sets — which makes meaning relationships an incredibly hard task. You have the constant job insecurity constantly nipping at your heels, with the thoughts of whether or not Hollywood will dropkick you to the curb forever in the back of your minds.
And then you have certain on-set difficulties…like makeup. Yes, today motion performance is all the rage, with movies like War for the Planet of the Apes and Avatar kind of doing away with the need for elaborate makeup like the romantic days of the past.

However, with Netflix’s latest original film, Bright, makeup is something that was used extensively to transform human actors into convincing orcs. One such actor is star Joel Edgerton, who plays the role of Nick Jakoby, the first orc cop, a character who finds himself caught between the world of man and the world of orc.
The makeup on the character was exceptional, and according to Yahoo!, it took an impressive three hours a day for the makeup artists to apply to the actor. With the film’s 60-day shoot taken into account, that means he roughly spent seven and a half days with his butt in the chair, slowly transforming into an orc.
Regarding this process, Edgerton admits that it was “not without its challenges, but [provided] an incredible freedom to get rid of all vanity.”
While reception to the film has been mixed to negative, he was an undoubted bright spot (no pun intended) in this film. Bright is shortlisted to get nominated for Best Makeup at next year’s Oscars. We’ll see if it’s able to go all the way.
