Brooklyn Nine-Nine Scrapping Season 8 Plans Starting Over

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is easily one of my top favorite television shows currently on television. It follows a group of police officers from the 99 Precinct in Brooklyn, New York. They gets into various hilarious situations as they attempt to protect and serve their community. As they gear up for their eighth season, it comes at a time where our country is going through some difficult times.

The death of George Floyd sparked nationwide Black Lives Matter protests. There is an outcry for our country to re-examine the amount of force police officers as well as their accountability. Due to this very sensitive subject according to series star Terry Crews in an interview with Access Daily, the writing team for Brooklyn Nine-Nine is rewriting the storyline for season 8. “Our show-runner Dan Goor, they had four episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash,” said Crews.

Crews then told Access that Goor’s decision to scrap season 8’s plans for the series was not a decision he made on his own. The cast and crew of the show came together and talked about how their series that follows police officers in New York can adapt to the changing political and cultural landscape. “We’ve had a lot of somber talks about it and deep conversations and we hope through this we’re going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year,” Crews said. “We have an opportunity and we plan to use it in the best way possible.”

Recently Brooklyn Nine-Nine made a $100,000 donation to the National Bail Fund Network in the wake of the protests. It’s great to see a series recognizing what the country is going through and making adjustments. This doesn’t come as a surprise as it features a very diverse cast of characters. It will be interesting to see what kind of changes the new scripts for the next season include.
