Even though the funny cop genre has been done time and time again, the officers of the Nine-Nine keep finding ways to make it original. A great cast led by former Saturday Night Live star Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine brings Samberg’s goofy brand of awkward comedy to the NYPD.
The popular FOX comedy has been renewed for a fifth season reports, Coming Soon. The show, which is set at a precinct in Brooklyn, New York, deals with the daily procedures of what looks to be the most fun a person could have inside a police station.
Officially led by the strict and very dry Captain Raymond Holt, and unofficially misled by the childish, Die Hard-loving detective, Jake Peralta, the other officers in the Nine-Nine precinct somehow manage to get work done while putting up with Peralta’s antics.
Detective Charles Boyle, played by Joe Lo Truglio, looks for Jake’s approval at every turn, and plays the straight man to Samberg’s wild and crazy guy. He is always looking for ways to claim the title of Jake’s best friend, however the feeling is not always mutual. Brought on by his love of the finer things in life, Detective Boyle is the often the target of ridicule throughout the precinct.
Over the previous seasons, there has been a budding romance between Samberg’s detective character, Jake Peralta, and fellow Detective Amy Santiago, played by Melissa Fumero. Opposites do attract as Peralta’s immature hijinx and general irresponsibility often get out of hand and drive the straight laced and flat out goody-two-shoe’d Santiago crazy. This dynamic is nothing new to television, but Samberg and Fumero pull it off by each bringing something new to the classic formula.
The hidden gem of the cast is Detective Rosa Diaz played by Stephanie Beatriz. Rosa is easily the most feared officer in the precinct by colleagues and criminals alike. Using only a series of stares to bend the opposition to her will, Rosa is not to be trifled with.
Also starring Terry Crews as the family man, Lieutenant Terry Jeffords, and Chelsie Peretti as the office killjoy Gina Linetti. The cast is rounded out by the two lovable but bumbling veteran detectives, Hitchcock and Scully, played by Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs Tuesdays on FOX.
