Bruce Willis will be taking on the role of famous boxing trainer Cus D’Amato in a new film titled Cornerman. The film will be the directorial debut of Homeland cast member, Rupert Friend. Set in the 1980s, the film will follow the career of D’Amato and chronicle how he came to train Mike Tyson.
In a statement Friend had this to say:
“Ultimately, this is a story about a deep love between two ferocious talents, each brave enough to admit their fears to the other, and so spur one another to greatness. It is a story about fighting for what you believe in, and a film that will make you question what strength really is.”
D’Amato trained many famous boxers including Floyd Patterson and Jose Torres, but found Mike Tyson when he was just a teenager and in a reform school. Depending on your age you may remember Tyson was an absolute force to be reckoned with in the ring, as well as having many personal issues outside the realm of boxing. The film seems like it will focus on D’Amato as opposed to Tyson. D’Amato adopted Mike Tyson after the death of his mother. The role of Mike Tyson in the film has yet to be cast.
