Can Sony Create Silver & Black Without Spider-Man? Former Director Seems Unsure

Is Silver & Black dead without Spider-Man at Sony?

Sony is a studio that always seems desperately in search of another big project. We’ve seen what seems like desperation in several instances, including in how they’ve handled Spider-Man in the past. Like any studio, they are working to milk every property for what they are worth, but they really seem to go the extra mile with Spider-Man. This seems to include potential projects for Spider-Man-adjacent characters — much to the chagrin of many fans.

Among these characters, we have the likes of Madame Web, Morbius, and of course, Venom. Two other characters who were poised to get their own feature some time ago were Silver Sable and Black Cat. Gina Prince-Bythewood was attached to the project for some time before it petered out.

While promoting her new Netflix flick The Old Guard, Prince-Bythewood was asked about the status of that project.

“My honest answer is I don’t know,” she said in a roundtable. “I really love those characters, I loved having them together. I thought, what we came up with was a really good, really organic way to have the two together. That world is changing so much because of the success of the Spider-Man films.”

“There’s a question of, ‘Can you really have these films with Spider-Man not in them?” she continued. “Should he at least have some sort of part in them?’ That’s always the question. I’ve taken two years off of that for [The Old Guard] so once this gets out into the world, I hope it’s a success, and then I’ll certainly go back and start talking with them again.”

So, from the sound of it, she isn’t necessarily done with the project yet. Perhaps when she is done, she’ll be able to revive the characters. However, based on her response, it does seem as though Sony is unsure of how to proceed with some of the lesser-known characters. Honestly, this is probably a good thing. In the past, I would have expected them to go forward no matter what.

At least in this instance, they realize how important Spider-Man’s involvement with these characters is and that they shouldn’t be so quick to make a standalone for every character. I can’t help but wonder if the studio is waiting to see what comes of the rest of their films — as well as their deal with Marvel Studios regarding Spider-Man.

We shall have to wait and see. Are you happy to see Silver & Black still on hold? Sound off in the comments down below!
