After Friday’s finale of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier it was announced that Captain America 4 would be coming to theatres. The movie will be written by TFATWS head writer Malcolm Spellman, and star Anthony Mackie, who of course just became Captain America. Spellman will be aided in the screenplay by Dalan Musson. This information was shared by THR late on Friday afternoon.
Spellman was showrunner of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier but also specifically penned the first and last episodes. Musson penned the penultimate episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, so he is familiar with this material. The Trade reports that as yet no director has been lined up for the movie. One wonder whether Kari Skogland’s name will be in the running after directing The Falcon and The Winter Soldier? So far there appears to be no hint of Chris Evans returning despite recent rumors around an Evans MCU return. Though, there is disagreement amongst insiders with some saying Evans will return in a different movie, and others saying that isn’t yet clear.
It would make very little sense to use Chris Evans in Mackie’s first outing as Captain America for me. Evans would pout the focus on himself as Cap, and what we need is a movie showing how Sam handles being Cap now he’s taken on the mantle.
I have to say that I wasn’t all that impressed by Spellman’s writing in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. However, the one things Spellman did nail for me was Sam, Bucky, Zemo and Walker. I personally wasn’t that impressed with any of the secondary characters, nor the plot itself. I therefore have mixed feelings about a Spellman penned Captain America 4. However, I hope with the shorter run time, and the fact this is a big movie, perhaps the connective tissue will feel better in Cap 4? Will Bucky return, will Zemo, Walker, or even the not so mysterious Power Broker? Who can say for now?
