Captain America star Anthony Mackie talks New World Order in a recent interview with Variety. As you’d guess, he doesn’t spoil anything. However Mackie plays coy on Thunderbolts when asked if he will appear in that film as well? So far the only project we can say for absolute certainty Mackie will appear in is Captain America: New World Order which he will lead.
So far all we have is some rumors about the plot. Given we know Tim Blake Nelson returns as The Leader, most of those rumors have centered and Hulk’s and there are also rumors Mark Ruffalo may appear. However all Mackie is saying is that thematically, things will carry on from FATWS with the same writer Marcus Spellman on scripting duties here.
“They’re definitely very inclusive. When we did “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” [writer] Malcolm Spellman and I talked at length about what that character was turning into, what we wanted him to be, what we wanted that narrative to be. Now with Malcolm writing this “Captain America,” it’s the exact same thing. We’ve talked and communicated about what we want that story to be going forward and how it’ll fit in this new Marvel universe. You definitely get the idea of collaboration, but you don’t get to tell them what it’s going to be.”
I guess with a franchise this big and a character this prominent and symbolic, the fact Mackie feels like it’s a collaboration is a good thing.

My one worry with New World Order though is the fact I didn’t enjoy all the writing in FATWS. I felt the antagonists were poorly developed, and the characters followed the plot rather than the plot following the characters. That being said, the interactions between Sam and Bucky were good. Also, the overall theme of becoming Cap and taking that mantle were handled well.
As for Thunderbolts the cast has been announced and some fans have wondered whether Cap should get involved. So is Mackie going to be in Thunderbolts? If he is, Mackie says he currently hasn’t been told.
“I have no idea. You know how it works. They call you the week before and are like, “We own your ass. Come get in the movie.””
On first glance I’m not sure it makes sense for Cap to be in Thunderbolts. Surely the idea is to take these less lauded characters and put them in a situation on their own? I can’t see the Thunderbolts going up against Cap or any Avengers, not yet anyway. I therefore fail to see the fan speculation around Mackie being involved. But hey, maybe I’m wrong?
