There seemed to be a lot of question marks going into Captain Marvel. While we knew it would make money, no one could seem to agree on how much it would make. Our own Kyle Malone thought it would make south of $800 million, and I thought it would make around $900 million worldwide. And then, of course, there was the whole controversy surrounding Brie Larson’s comments, which led to a lot of outrage from certain fans.
Of course, by this point, we know the movie has made a whole lot of money — much more than virtually anyone out there has predicted it to make. Now, THR is reporting that the film has passed $1 billion in ticket sales, which is comprised of $358 million in North America and $645 million in international markets. This comes just as Shazam! is bounding into theaters this coming weekend, so I expect a substantial dropoff…even if this is already a runaway hit at this point.

Captain Marvel is in good company, as it is the seventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to break that all-important $1 billion mark, and joins the likes of Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, The Avengers, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3. Given that this is the MCU’s first female superhero, this is a huge deal, as it reaffirms the idea that there is plenty of hunger out there for female-driven superhero movies.
