Captain Marvel Breaks Wonder Woman’s Domestic Total

Avengers: Endgame wasn’t the only Marvel Studios movie to hit some important milestones this past weekend. Sure, it may be on course to pretty much break every record known to man for the foreseeable future, but its predecessor, Captain Marvel, managed to come in in a distant second place at the domestic box office, meaning that Marvel Studios had two movies in theaters at the same time.

But that’s not all. The performance at the box office managed to push the film past the $1.1 billion mark worldwide and $413 million domestically. The latter is especially important because it officially blew past the domestic total set by Wonder Woman, the 2017 film that was the first glimmer of hope for the DCEU. That movie went on to be a cultural phenomenon, so Captain Marvel passing it up is a huge deal.

Of course, there is no doubt that it benefited from being released so closely to Avengers: Endgame, but that shouldn’t take away from how amazing of an accomplishment it is for all parties involved. The film managed to take it 95% of the way there on its own, and in spite of all the controversy surrounding it, it’s clear there was a void that the movie was able to fill for moviegoers.
