This past weekend may have been all about Marvel with Avengers: Endgame breaking every record known to mankind, but we can’t forget about DC, whose films are slowly working their way into the hearts of audiences. And while we may now be super excited to see where director James Gunn is taking the Guardians of the Galaxy in their third outing, we can’t forget he has a DC movie to make before that: The Suicide Squad.
That’s right, if you’ve somehow been living under a rock, last year, James Gunn was canned from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney following the resurfacing of a series of off-color tweets from years past. In the time between when he was fired and when he was rehired, Gunn locked down the gig to write and direct a sequel/reboot to the financially successful, yet critically-paned Suicide Squad. Speaking with EW, Gunn opened up about where they were in the process:
“I am in pre-production on The Suicide Squad, which I am enormously excited about.”
It is currently not clear when production is set to begin on the film, but it being this far along in the process would seem to indicate the script has been finished. Given that the movie is set to be released on August 6, 2021, it does seem to be an uncharacteristically long amount of time for them to get a movie done (though I guess that’s refreshing compared to what happened with the first movie).
