Captain Marvel Co-Director On Creating That ’90s Nostalgia

Oh, nostalgia. No matter who you are, chances are you have nostalgia for at least one period in history. In recent years, the ’80s is one decade that has become the popular go-to place for one’s nostalgia fix. With shows like Stranger Things becoming incredibly popular, it’s become a common pop culture setting or aesthetic for some of the biggest content out there for us. But isn’t it about time another decade had its chance to shine?

With Captain Marvel, audiences will be treated to a heavy dose of ’90s nostalgia. That’s right, grunge will be making a big comeback in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe flick, completely with motorcycles, leather jackets, Blockbuster Videos, and of course, era-appropriate music. Regarding that last one, at a recent press conference LRM Online attended, co-director Ryan Fleck was asked how they went about how they went about putting together the musical cues for the flick. Here’s what he said.

“Oh yeah, we started, we made like a big playlist at the beginning of the movie and we shared it with the crew and some of the cast and… some of those songs are in the movie, but it was really just… in post, we put the scenes together and just threw songs in and see what stuck. And, ah, it was… very much a collaboration with Kevin and the whole, the whole team at Marvel, to figure out which songs really worked the best. Um. I actually worked at a Blockbuster in 1995, so… [LAUGHTER] that brought back a lot of memories, creating that set.”

As with all Marvel Studios movies, it looks like this was quite the team effort. But will audiences take to it? I know there are plenty of outlets who welcomed the music, though our own Gig Patta did seem to feel it was a bit much at times (though he still enjoyed the film). Once the movie hits, we’ll be able to see how it all lands, but from the sound of it, that was all window dressing. So long as the core of the movie works, then I’m sure audiences will be pleased.
