Captain Marvel: The Minor Controversy The Film Predicted

Damn, who would have thought that Captain Marvel would be such the hot button film for Marvel Studios. Say what you will about their movies, but controversial isn’t really one of them. Over the course of the past 10 years, they’ve done a pretty good job of making movies that generally appealed to just about everyone — almost to a fault. But with their first female-led film, I guess this was bound to happen.

However, star Brie Larson’s recent comments and the Rotten Tomatoes explosion that followed weren’t the first minor controversy to hit. You may recall when that first poster and trailer hit, she was criticized for being stiff and wooden. One went so far as to Photoshop a smile on her face with the caption stating that he “fixed” it. And you know what? Apparently, this is something the movie itself was prescient about.

In one scene where a biker tells Carol Danvers to smile.

“That’s just a depiction of the female experience,” Larson told Yahoo Entertainment. “That’s just what it’s like. So it didn’t really both me that much when I saw that that was the reaction because that’s just how it goes.”

Co-director Anna Boden doubled down on this perspective.

“It was always in the script. It’s not an uncommon thing for women to hear. So it doesn’t surprise me at all that it was in social media. I think a lot of women can relate to that moment.”

Considering I’m not a woman, I really can’t offer any accurate perspective on this, but this is one of those moments where something is captured from a perspective that half of the world may not be privy to. Larson continued:

“It happens. This is part of why art that depicts the female experience is so important because on one hand, for women and girls it allows us to go, ‘Oh, I have that experience, too.’ And those that aren’t in our bodies can go, ‘Wait, that happens to you? We’ve gotta do better.’”
