Captain Marvel TV Spot “Climb” Brings Nothing New

We are 67 days from the March 8th release of Captain Marvel and this weekend gave us our second TV spot for the film. It is just as its predecessor, a shorter clip of the existing trailers. I know many of you, myself included, do not want the entire movie shown to us through advertisements, but there has to be a balance between showing us what we’ve seen and something new. So far all we’ve been given is stuff we’ve seen before.

This clip is first narrated by Annette Benning’s character where she repeats the bit about Captain Marvel being found and “reborn” from the last trailer. Then we get the same lines from the hero about looking for her past and not fighting a war, but ending it. This TV spot is… boring.

I can’t be the only one getting worried about this movie. am I? Every conversation I have had with people about the trailers has been the same… “meh.” They’re unimpressive and severely lacking in dialogue and interactions with the titular character. Don’t get me wrong, they don’t look bad, they just feel underwhelming. I really want this movie to do well and exceed my expectations. I know, or at least hope, they will start tying the Endgame and Captain Marvel advertising together to generate more excitement. However, this must still be balanced with keeping some secrets for movie night. I think we need to see some more emotions from Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, and I don’t mean that as in “she should smile more” or any other sexist way, but that so far her character seems one dimensional. I want to see fear, anger, and hate (yes I just did that) as well as sadness and joy. This character is very important for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and therefore must be fully developed and capable of being more than a stoic warrior. Yes, I know we’ve likely only seen her under the control or programming of the Kree, but they need to show something to put people at ease.
