Gotham – The Penguin’s Rise In Season 5

The return of Fox’s Batman prequel Gotham is just around a couple days away, and with it, we will see the conclusion of the series that set out to give us fans an idea of the famous comic book city before rise of the Batman. Over the last four season the show has given us looks at younger versions of famous Batman villains including Penguin, Riddler, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.

For me and many other viewers, Robin Lord Taylor’s portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin has always been a scene stealer and one of the best parts of the show. The actor recently spoke with CBR and talked about how Penguin will take control in the upcoming season.

“As most people would see Gotham being cut off from the rest of the world as something to be panicked about, Penguin saw an opportunity, and this is his chance. There’s a vacuum there of control, and so he puts himself in City Hall because let’s not forget he was mayor once. So in a very twisted Gotham way, he is the most qualified person for that position. There’s been a vacuum of power in the city and… also, he really does believe that he’s doing the right thing. Like, someone needed to be there to organize, to make sure — you know — some system of order is in place and he rebuilds it in his image. So he starts off in a very high place of power in Season 5.”

Penguin has always been a villain one roots for, at least I do. Despite his psychopathic tendencies, he has at times shown he has a heart and can also be very charming. He has risen through the ranks of Gotham’s criminal pecking order starting out as a humble umbrella holder for former crime Boss Fish Mooney. Glad to see he will be running the show for the upcoming season.

While I was initially skeptical about a Batman-less show about Gotham City, I quickly realized I was wrong and became a fan of the show. Yes, at times the series shows levels of a modern day campiness, but it has also given fans some of the best iterations of Batman villains, Penguin and Riddler most of all.

The showrunners have already promised that viewers will get to see the Dark Knight on screen this season, after seeing a young Bruce Wayne grow into the hero Gotham deserves.
