Captain Marvel: Why Clark Gregg Found His Return As Phil Coulson Moving

Agent Phil Coulson was an unexpectedly warm character for me. I’d always found his scenes in Iron Man to be funny also a little clunky, and it wasn’t really until Thor and Iron Man 2 where his role in the universe really became clear. And then there was The Avengers. I went to see an entire marathon of Marvel movies before the midnight premiere of the film, and his character was the one introducing each movie. Couple that with his increased importance in The Avengers and you have a recipe for true heartbreak in that film.

Of course, we now know actor Clark Gregg would go on to star in his own TV show, but at the time his death felt truly final. And even though he has appeared in countless episodes of TV as the character, his presence has been missed in the actual Marvel Cinematic Universe proper. This weekend’s Captain Marvel we’ll see the man returning to his role, albeit 20 years earlier. Speaking at a press conference LRM Online had a chance to attend, Gregg gave us some insight into how he feels returning in this movie after all this time.

“I’ve had a long journey — 11 years I think. And including 130 hours of television and a lot of trauma and heartbreaks, so for me to come back around to a very innocent, excited space, an origin moment was… I found it really moving.”

Even though I know his character will be a lot more naïve, I’m still really looking forward to seeing his personality in these movies. But that you? Have the joys of one Agent Coulson been missing for you? Let us know your thoughts down below!
