Cara Dune Won’t Be Recast After Gina Carano Firing

The Mandalorian exec producers Rick Famuyiwa and Dave Filoni discuss moving on without Cara Dune in Season 3

Cara Dune won’t be recast! Yesterday THR ran a piece on the firing of Gina Carano. The article also had a nugget of new information which people like me and all the other outlets caught on to. The piece originally said the role of Cara Dune would be recast and this sent the fans into speculation mode. However, interestingly almost as soon as this came out, LRM got word that this was not the case. Before we could even think about trying to confirm this piece of news with another source, THR updated their own article with the same information.

Now, no one is backing what LRM says when we are going against a trade, so there’s no way we would have ran that without a second source to confirm. Luckily that’s not needed and the situation has been clarified. Cara Dune will not be recast. Here is the exact wording of the update from THR at 17:47 PST yesterday.

Updated to add a Lucasfilm source saying that Cara Dune role on The Mandalorian is not expected to be recast and that she was not part of the Dec. 10 presentation, nor was she engaged in negotiations for future work.

Hmm, that last part interests me greatly. Is THR‘s source telling them Gina wasn’t planned to have a role going forward? Or was it just that they had not started negotiations with Carano yet? We certainly know that Lucasfilm had plans for Cara Dune and Gina. Remember it was LRM who first revealed that a show led by Carano was being developed. Our friends at KRT then immediately added on that Bo-Katan (Sackhoff) was also planned for that show.

Now, we don’t know for certain, but we all think this show was Rangers of the New Republic. That surely means that whatever plans Lucasfilm had for Rangers needs to be changed? As for Carano, it makes sense that a contract might not have been arranged with Carano, yet. After all, from this report by THR and reports we’ve heard elsewhere, Carano was already on a shaky nail with Lucasfilm prior to this latest event.

Do Lucasfilm then go and create a new character to fill the Cara Dune slot in Rangers? I don’t know, but my guess for who would be involved in that show was always Bo-Katan, Cara, and Mayfield. Though, maybe we are way off on this one now? What if Rangers was never where they planned to take Cara Dune and that show has been canned? It seems highly unlikely and I’m just playing Devil’s advocate a little here to be fair. I do think Rangers of the New Republic was where we were going to see much more of Cara Dune. No longer though.

Carano Found Out With Us

We also just found out that Carano herself did not know she had been dropped by Lucasfilm until she saw the public announcement. Carano gave an interview to Bari Weiss who had written an article supporting the actor. Carano said that following her gender pronoun posts, Lucasfilm had wanted her to use their exact wording over an apology. When Carano told them she would rather word it herself, she says they excluded her from all promotions for Season 2 of The Mandalorian.

“That was heart-breaking, but I didn’t want to take away from the hard work of everyone who worked on the project, so I said ok,” recalls the actress. “That was the last time I was contacted about any type of public statement or apology from Lucasfilm. I found out through social media, like everyone else, that I had been fired.”

So it definitely seems like this has been on the cards for some time. The latest controversial post was as has been reported the final straw for Lucasfilm. One even wonders back now to when the Lucasfilm artists removed Cara Dune’s image from that poster, then told us it was nothing sinister. Hmm?

There you have it, Cara Dune won’t be recast, so one assumes the character will just never be mentioned again or killed off-screen. Thoughts below as always folks, and do try and keep it civil in the comments you two, You know who I am talking to.
