Warner Bros.’ film Birds of Prey seems to be coming along nicely. We know that Margot Robbie will be reprising her role as the ever so popular Harley Quinn. Joining her will be Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollet-Bell as Huntress and Black Canary along with Rosie Perez as Gotham City police detective Renne Montoya. The villain for the film will be the Black Masked, who will be played by Ewan McGregor.

But according to Variety there is another important character to this film that has been cast. Newcomer Ella Jay Basco will play the role of Cassandra Cain. In DC Comics, she is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. During her childhood she was deprived of speech and human contact as she trained to become the worlds greatest assassin. But at one point she befriends Bruce Wayne and becomes Batgirl. Although for this film it is very unlikely that they would include the Batgirl element.

Her character plays a major role in Birds of Prey as Variety reports that,
“In the new film, Robbie, Winstead, and Smollett-Bell team up to protect Cain’s character when she comes across a diamond belonging to McGregor’s Black Mask, a kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld.”

If you know anything about Black Mask, you know that stealing from him is a very bad idea as he has a very short temper and will without a doubt come after you. So Cassandra would need all the help she can get to escape his grasp. This role will be Basco’s first major role, she has previously had guest appearances on television shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Veep and Superior Donuts. The film is being directed by Cathy Yan with Robbie producing along with Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless.
